Dear Road to Recovery Volunteer,

The South Atlantic Division has received a grant to help us improve our transportation services to patients so we can provide more rides to those in need. We recognize that our Road volunteers give generously of their time, vehicles, and gasoline to support our patients. We also know that with high and volatile gas prices, driving can be expensive. This is particularly true for drivers who drive frequently or for long distances.

From time to time we have heard of volunteers who have had to cut back on their driving or have stopped driving because of cost. We understand and we would like to do something about it. We will use a portion of the grant to provide mileage reimbursement in selected areas on a pilot basis. The pilot will run from November 1, 2011 through October 31, 2012. We want to determine if offsetting costs from driving will help with recruiting and retaining drivers. We also want to know if reimbursement encourages drivers to drive more frequently. After an evaluation process, a decision will be made regarding the fate of the pilot. If it is unsuccessful, it will be discontinued. If it is successful, we will consider offering it across the Division, depending on the availability of funds. Reimbursement will be at the IRS rate of 14 cents per mile.

This letter is to inform you that your Road program has been selected to participate in the pilot. Whether or not you wish to participate is a personal choice for you. Other drivers have told us they do not want to be reimbursed. Our goal is to provide more rides for more patients and you make those rides happen. We respect your decision either way.

Below you will find instructions for requesting mileage reimbursement. If you do not wish to participate, please ignore the links below:

We thank you for the difference you make in the lives of our patients and appreciate your service. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 1-800-966-3586 and ask for extension 23717.

Sincerely,

Diana Dew
